1.1 Summary
Strictly and explicitly, there is no verse in the Bible forbidding Christians from wearing jewellery, rings, or hair extensions. Some verses even show that such items were worn among the people (Exodus 32:2; Isaiah 3:21; Hosea 2:13). However, other verses also show that these items were often considered foreign gods (Genesis 35:4, 1–5), that they could be linked to what was forbidden and should not be found among God’s people, and that they often had to be removed from among the people in order to obtain victories or a better fellowship with God (Genesis 35:1–5; Joshua 7:12–13). It is therefore clear that depending on their origin, these items could be neutral or create unhealthy spiritual bonds, and therefore must be avoided.
Nowadays, people mainly buy these things in the market. They do not know whether the manufacturer has consecrated them as foreign gods or as links to those gods. Yet Satan works, and so do his servants. It would be unreasonable to think that he abandoned this possibility for keeping people bound to him. Thus, there are win-win agreements between him and certain merchants or manufacturers, to whom he guarantees large sales of items consecrated to foreign gods or demons, facilitating their presence or creating oppression and misfortune in the lives of those who wear them. Numerous testimonies from former merchants, former Satanists, or former victims of such objects are available on TikTok or YouTube with appropriate searches. It would be unreasonable to believe that they all lie. The false pastors or false prophets using rings or perfumes to bewitch crowds are also proof of what rings can do. The tendency of women wearing hair extensions to constantly touch their extensions or their heads should remind us that they are under an influence without being aware of it, believing it to be normal.
Many individuals and many families suffer from problems and diseases originating from these objects, including wedding rings. They do not realise it, they carry the cause of their misfortunes with them and look for solutions elsewhere (Joshua 7:12–13). If you suffer from persistent afflictions of unknown origin, get rid of these objects, burn them, or keep them far from you and your house, just to see. Some cannot reach the spiritual elevation available to them, cannot abandon certain sins (fornication, envy, covetousness…), cannot get rid of certain illnesses, without knowing that the origin is these things. Some say they “sanctify” these objects. I do not know how they believe they have the ability to sanctify what is forbidden with certainty, when they are not able to heal the sick with certainty. And the example of Joshua 7:12–13 shows us that one does not sanctify what is forbidden. According to Numbers 31:23, metal that does not fall under the ban could be purified by fire.
It is therefore wise for the Christian who does not have the ability to discern consecrated objects from neutral ones to simply avoid them. Even the Christian who would have this ability should also avoid them, so as not to be a stumbling block to others. Indeed, the one without spiritual discernment, seeing someone he believes to be more advanced in his relationship with God using these things, will conclude that he also may use them, without understanding that he does not have the discernment to choose. Thus, he creates burdens or a good opportunity to fall by imitating the other. But we are forbidden to be stumbling blocks to our brethren; it is one of the worst things a servant of God can do (Romans 14:13, 20; 1 Corinthians 8:9; Revelation 2:14).
Furthermore, these items are also occasions for physical stumbling, given their propensity to provoke fornication, adultery, and other sins. What can a woman covered with jewellery and hair extensions provoke in the one who looks at her, except sexual desire and the acts that follow? It is true that a woman without these things can attract. But with them, she attracts more—and especially more wicked men—and thus exposes herself to temptation (Hosea 2:13; Ezekiel 16:11–15). These items also often show a refusal to put off the old man, which grows corrupt through lusts, and a desire to appear by displaying the things of the flesh (Ephesians 4:21–23; 1 Peter 3:3–4; 1 Timothy 2:9–10).
Some may say that following this reasoning, we should not buy clothes, oils… because they too may be produced with satanic involvement. There is an important difference here. We are told, “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Clothing is a necessity of life. We must wear it. God will guide us to the right clothing (spiritually speaking), or even remove the bad ones (tearing, loss…). We must pray for His guidance and protection. However, rings, hair extensions, perfumes… are not necessities of life.
Let us also remember that God continues to speak to us, and not only through the Bible. I like to say that it is God who removed my wedding ring, showing me that I should not have it. Afterwards, He made me understand that perfumes were contributing to making my wife ill, and she stopped using them (I did not and do not use any). God speaks to some, and they do not realise it (Job 33:14).
Let us run in such a way as to obtain the prize, distancing ourselves from stumbling blocks and from what may distance us from God and hinder our spiritual elevation, like the prophet Daniel who refused food from the royal table, fearing to defile himself (1 Corinthians 9:24–25; Philippians 3:13–15; Daniel 1:8).
1.2 Some Analyses
Genesis 35:1–5
(We note that the people dispose of the earrings as part of purification, and then their enemies do not pursue them. Earrings seem to be associated with foreign gods, and their removal facilitates victory in battles.)
Genesis 35:1–5 (KJV)
1 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
Exodus 32:2
And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
(Here the people come out of Egypt and appear to behave like Egyptians rather than Israelites, and these items are used to make a golden calf.)
Numbers 31:50
We have therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the Lord.
(The items that were found were rather given.)
Judges 8:24
And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
Isaiah 3:21
The rings, and nose jewels;
Hosea 2:13
And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the Lord.
1 Peter 3:3–4
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
1 Timothy 2:9–10
9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
Isaiah 3:18
In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
Ezekiel 16:11–12; 15
11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.
12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.
(Here it is God Himself who adorns, and He speaks of a people. Therefore, this is allegorical and not related to a woman. However, we see that even in this case, the woman, trusting in her beauty, prostituted herself.)
15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
One does not sanctify objects consecrated to the devil, or objects under the ban
Joshua 7:12
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
Joshua 7:13
Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
