John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

¹⁷For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

¹⁸He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

Revelation 5:8-9 “And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. ⁹And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.”

John 20:31 “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

John 10:36 “Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?”

1 John 2:21-23 “I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. ²²Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. ²³Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.”

Preaching to the Gentiles

Acts 14:18-23 (Paul and Jupiter)

Hebrews 9:1-12

What does “believe in Jesus” mean?

In a French dictionary, we find this definition for believing in someone: “Believing in someone, having confidence in him, in his talents, in his word.”

According to a link from the French Academy that establishes the difference between “believe in” and “believe to,” it is said: “To believe to someone means that one is certain of his existence, that one acknowledges his power. To believe in someone or something signifies a more confident abandonment than believing to, an adhesion, often of the heart, that can entail a moral or even religious behavior.”

Therefore, I can conclude that regarding Jesus Christ, “believe in him” means:

  1. Having total confidence in him, in his word, in his talents
  2. Believing in the truth of what he said and in what the prophets said about him
  3. Believing that he is capable of fulfilling his promises and his mission
  4. Attesting this belief by respecting his word, especially in the face of persecution or danger.

If you only believe that Jesus Christ is alive, but do not think he is capable of delivering you from sin, then you believe to Jesus, but you do not believe in Jesus. This is in light of his words below.

What did he say?

John 8:32-36 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. ³³They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? ³⁴Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. ³⁵And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. ³⁶If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Matthew 20:28

“Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Matthew 11:28

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

John 6:37

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

Matthew 7:21-23

“²¹Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. ²²Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? ²³And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Luke 8:21

“And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

John 3:5

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 6:19-21

“¹⁹Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: ²¹For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Matthew 6:33

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Mark 16:16

“He that believeth and is baptised shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”

Acts 2:38

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

Romans 5:8

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Philippians 4:7

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Jude 1:5

“I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.”

Deuteronomy 18:10-13

“¹⁰There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, ¹¹Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ¹²For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. ¹³Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.”

Numbers 13(Incredulity towards the children of Anak, comparable to incredulity towards great difficulties of the present time) “

³⁰And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. ³¹But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. ³²And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. ³³And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. ¹⁴And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. ²And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!”

Numbers 14:3-4

“³And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? ⁴And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”

The proove of faith

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
